Background of the Study

Financial reporting practices are vital for ensuring transparency, regulatory compliance, and informed decision-making within organizations. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), sound financial reporting is crucial to gain access to credit facilities, attract investors, and maintain operational sustainability. In Nigeria, SMEs constitute a significant portion of the economy, contributing to employment and GDP. However, poor financial reporting practices remain a pressing issue for many SMEs, particularly those in Ibadan, Oyo State (Olaniyan et al., 2023).

Financial reporting involves preparing financial statements such as balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. However, Nigerian SMEs often lack the resources, expertise, or motivation to comply with financial reporting standards (Adewole & Fadeyi, 2024). Common challenges include insufficient training, inadequate accounting systems, and a lack of awareness of regulatory requirements. These deficiencies can lead to financial mismanagement, reduced investor confidence, and limited access to financing.

The city of Ibadan, as a major commercial center in southwestern Nigeria, hosts a diverse range of SMEs. Understanding their financial reporting practices and challenges is essential to developing tailored solutions that enhance transparency, compliance, and financial performance.

Statement of the Problem

Many SMEs in Ibadan struggle with poor financial reporting practices due to limited knowledge of accounting standards, inadequate financial records, and a lack of professional expertise. This hinders their ability to secure funding, comply with tax regulations, and monitor financial performance. Despite efforts to improve SME financial reporting, a significant knowledge gap persists, particularly concerning the practices and challenges faced by SMEs in Ibadan. This study seeks to address this gap by providing an in-depth assessment of financial reporting practices in Ibadan SMEs.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by SMEs in adopting sound financial reporting practices.

  3. To propose strategies for improving financial reporting practices in SMEs.
